Biblical Foundation
At our church, we believe that the leadership structure is vital to
the spiritual health and growth of our congregation. The decision to be
led by elders is rooted in the teachings of the New Testament, where the
early church was often guided by a group of mature and spiritually
qualified individuals known as elders.
Scriptural References
The New Testament provides several references to the role and
responsibilities of elders. In Acts 14:23, Paul and Barnabas appointed
elders in each church they established. Similarly, Titus 1:5 indicates
that elders were appointed to oversee the churches in Crete. These
passages, among others, highlight the importance of a plural leadership
model for maintaining doctrinal purity and providing pastoral care.
Plural Leadership Model
Having multiple elders ensures a balanced and accountable leadership.
This plural model helps prevent any single individual from having
excessive control, promoting a healthy distribution of authority and
responsibility. It encourages a diversity of gifts and perspectives,
allowing for more robust decision-making and spiritual guidance.
Qualifications of Elders
Our elders are chosen based on the qualifications outlined in 1
Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9. These passages emphasize the importance
of character, integrity, and spiritual maturity. Elders must be above
reproach, able to teach, and manage their households well. This ensures
that those in leadership are well-equipped to shepherd the congregation
with wisdom and compassion.
The Creation
We believe in the Genesis account of creation; that it is to be
accepted literally, and not allegorically or figuratively; that man was
created directly in God's own image and after His own likeness; that
man's creation was not a matter of evolution or evolutionary change of
species, or developments through interminable periods of time from lower
to higher forms; that all animals and vegetable life were made
directly; and that God's established law was that they should bring
forth only "after their kind."
Role and Responsibilities
Elders in our church are responsible for teaching, shepherding, and
overseeing the spiritual well-being of the congregation. They provide
guidance in doctrinal matters, support members in their spiritual
journeys, and ensure that the church remains faithful to its mission. By
leading through example and service, elders help cultivate a loving and
spiritually enriching community.
Community and Accountability
Our elder-led model fosters a strong sense of community and
accountability. Elders are approachable and accessible, allowing members
to seek counsel and support. This
structure also promotes
transparency and trust, as decisions are made collectively and in the
best interest of the entire congregation.
Conclusion
In summary, our church is led by elders because we believe it aligns
with the biblical model of church governance, ensures balanced
leadership, and promotes the spiritual health of our congregation. We
are committed to following the scriptural guidelines for appointing and
empowering elders who are dedicated to serving God and His people.
